Finding the Right Riding Kit for You
A Guide For Different Cycling Kit Needs
A Guide For Different Cycling Kit Needs
Cycling is a diverse sport with many unique needs that suit the individual cyclist. Whether you’re taking up the sport to take leisurely weekend rides or to test your endurance over long trails, it’s not just your bike that will differ, it’s your kit too. We look at what kit you’ll need in the various areas that cycling has to offer.
ROAD/ CLUB KIT
When it comes to cycling apparel, there are two main types of fit: "Club Fit" and "Race Cut". The former is known for being looser than the latter, particularly in cycling jerseys, but also in bike shorts and bib shorts. This type of fit is designed to accommodate a wider range of body shapes and sizes. Women's cycling jerseys are also available in both fit types but are tailored specifically to fit the female body proportions.
ROAD RACER KIT
The "Race Cut" is a style of cycling gear that is designed to fit tighter, mimicking a more aggressive riding position. These kits are more comfortable when you're on the bike as opposed to walking around. This is because the cycling jersey, cycling shorts, and chamois are cut in a way that works best when you're in a riding position. It's important to note that these kits are generally only offered with bib shorts and come with a higher price tag.
COMMUTER KIT
When it comes to cycling to work, commuters have the option to choose between a club or race kit, but many opt for clothing that looks more casual. These clothes look like ordinary streetwear but offer breathability, moisture control, and ease of movement. The choice of clothing often depends on the rider's preference based on the distance they have to travel or the difficulty of the terrain. For those who have to commute over long distances or challenging terrain, a club kit would be a better choice as it provides less wind resistance and improves efficiency.
WET WEATHER ROAD BIKE CLOTHING
Cyclists who ride in wetter climates may choose to wear waterproof apparel to stay dry and comfortable. However, waterproof cycling gear often lacks breathability and can make it challenging to stay cool while riding. To address this, cyclists can select specific elements that are breathable and others that are waterproof. Some prefer to have cool and wet legs while keeping their torso and arms dry, while others prefer the opposite. We recommend using a very thin waterproof cycling jacket shell that can be easily packed away if the rain stops. Additionally, you can unzip the jacket to cool down while still getting good rain protection.
